The saying goes that Richter played everything ‘from Bach to Bartók.’ This is a bit gross as a statement, and needs to be explicated.

Richter was an eclecticist; in his own words, he said to Johannes Schaaf in the interview in Meslay (Grange de Meslay) upon his question: ‘Also Sie haben kein enzyklopädisches Bedürfnis …, oder?’

—Nein, um Gottes Willen! Ich spiele das, in was ich verliebt bin. Andere Sachen, die kann ich auch hören … ich muss nicht alles spielen …
